Cryptocurrencies are based on advanced mathematics and complex algorithms. Millions of people around the world use them to transact (buy and sell) and store value. The appeal of cryptocurrencies is that they can provide the basic infrastructure for a truly free and open economy, independent from a central authority and control.

It is highly likely that in the future, we will be just as used to one or more cryptocurrencies as we are used to the Dollar or the Euro today.

However, a significant obstacle to entry for many people is the perception that cryptocurrencies, and its underlying technology, the Blockchain, are hard to understand. That is not true!

To help you understand the very basics of cryptocurrencies, we developed this "getting started guide."

We designed it as a weekend project.

Following this guide and using your Raspberry Pi, you will create a crypto wallet, install specialized software, and use it to create a series of cryptocurrencies.

By the end of this project, you NOT have the skills of "crypto-hacker," and you suddenly amass millions of dollars worth of Bitcoin.

However, you will know how to create cryptocurrencies, and you be familiar with the most essential concepts of its underlying technology.

In this project, you will learn to use your Raspberry Pi to facilitate an understanding of Blockchain technology.

You will learn what a cryptocurrency is, and how to get involved in the cryptocurrency world using open-source software and your Raspberry Pi.

You will learn how to mine:

- Bitcoin,
- Litecoin,
- Monero,
- Bytecoin,
- MagiCoin,
- and TurtleCoin.

Learning with practical examples is fun, and it is easier to understand concepts and new technologies.

Is cryptocurrency mining on the Raspberry Pi profitable?
No! The Raspberry Pi is an excellent compute for general-purpose learning, but it is not an optimised cryptocurrency miner. The cost of electricity needed to power the Raspberry Pi in higher than the value of the Bitcoins or other currency you will be able to mine using it. The purpose of this project is learning, not profiting.
Do I need any specialised hardware?
You will only need a Raspberry Pi. If you don't have one, you will be able to follow the exact same instructions on any computer running a Debian Linux operating system. If you are interested in specialised mining hardware, you will be able to apply the knowledge you will gain in this project.
Is crypto-mining or using cryptocurrency illegal?
No! Most countries around the world either recognise cryptocurrencies as normal currencies, or ignore them.

John Marountas
John Marountas

John Marountas studied Agricultural Engineering. Later, he became interested in Information Technology and computer programming in particular, as he appreciated the prospect of creating simulations of various events from the real world to efficiently solve daily problems.

He works primarily as a back-end developer for web applications for the PHP and Ruby scripting languages, but he also uses Java for desktop and android application development. He is a Maker enthusiast and uses Python for scripting on the Raspberry Pi and Arduino devices.

He is currently working as a freelancer for cutting-edge projects in web development. At the same time, he keeps an eye on the application of IT in agriculture.

His strength lies in his vast experience of handling data from various knowledge domains like the web, e-commerce, agriculture, biology, the stock market and sports betting.

John turned his attention since 2016 towards the blockchain technology and its promising features for a decentralized web platform. He experimented with various hardware setups to mine cryptocurrencies and understood from the inside out the life of this new computer ecosystem. During 2017 he started experimenting with the Solidity language and started working on smart contracts over the Ethereum platform .

John joined the Tech Explorations team in December 2017.
